Upvote

An upvote is the primary positive signal on Reddit, a single click that pushes a post or comment up in ranking and adds one to its score. Every user can upvote any post or comment once. The cumulative upvote-minus-downvote score, weighted by time, drives Reddit's ranking algorithms for the hot, top, and rising sorts.

Upvotes are the closest thing Reddit has to a unified currency. They determine which posts reach the front page of a subreddit (and possibly r/all), which comments float to the top of a thread, and how much karma a user accumulates. The exact score on a post is intentionally fuzzed by Reddit (you'll see 1.2k instead of 1,217) to make manipulation harder.

For marketers, treating upvotes as the success metric is a trap. A high-upvote thread that ranks #1 in a small subreddit might still drive zero qualified traffic if the audience isn't your buyer. Conversely, a 5-upvote comment on a long-tail question ("best Reddit monitoring tool for a solo founder?") can drive months of sign-ups because the right people find it via search. Score is a vanity number; intent and audience are the actual signals.

Upvotes are tied to anti-manipulation systems. Buying upvotes, asking your network to upvote your post, or coordinating votes from off-platform channels (Discord, Twitter, Slack) is treated as brigading and can result in vote nullification or account bans. Reddit's anti-abuse systems look at the voting graph, timing patterns, and account histories to detect coordinated activity.

Reddit Premium users get a small monthly allocation of "awards" they can apply to posts and comments alongside upvotes, but the core ranking signal remains the simple up-vs-down count.
