A downvote is Reddit's primary negative signal, a single click that lowers a post or comment's ranking and subtracts one from its score. Reddit's official guidance is that downvotes should be reserved for content that doesn't contribute to discussion, not content you simply disagree with — though in practice the two are conflated constantly.

Downvotes serve as the community's enforcement layer alongside formal moderation. Self-promotional posts that violate norms, off-topic comments, low-effort questions, and bad-faith arguments tend to attract enough downvotes to disappear from view without a mod ever touching them. A heavily-downvoted comment is auto-collapsed in most Reddit interfaces.

For marketers, the downvote button is the single most honest piece of feedback Reddit gives you. If your reply drops to -5 within an hour, the community is telling you the comment read as promotional, irrelevant, or otherwise unwelcome. The fastest way to learn what works on a subreddit is to write something, watch the early vote trajectory, and notice which kinds of comments earn negative scores.
