Lurker

A lurker is a Reddit user who reads posts and comments regularly but rarely or never posts, comments, or votes themselves. Lurkers are the silent majority of every subreddit — on most communities, the read-only audience outnumbers active commenters by roughly 100 to 1.

For marketers, this ratio is the entire point of Reddit. When you reply to a thread asking for tool recommendations, the OP is one reader; the next 500 readers over the following weeks and months are lurkers searching Google, ChatGPT, or Reddit itself for the same problem. A useful, well-written reply to a single thread can drive sign-ups for years because the lurkers keep finding it.

This is why thread-level relevance matters more than upvote count. A 3-upvote comment on a question that ranks in Google for a high-intent query can outperform a 2,000-upvote viral comment on a low-intent thread. Lurkers also explain why Reddit content has a long tail. For founders, the lesson is to write every comment as if a stranger will read it in 18 months while researching a buying decision. That standard rules out lazy plugs and rewards genuine specificity.
