Throwaway Account

A throwaway account is a Reddit account created for a single sensitive post or short conversation, then abandoned. The name comes from the user's intent to literally throw the account away after the conversation ends. Common use cases include medical questions, mental health discussions, anonymous confessions, asking about employer behavior without it being traceable, and discussing topics that would be uncomfortable to associate with the user's main Reddit identity.

Reddit's culture has a strong norm of respecting throwaway accounts. When someone posts "throwaway because reasons," repliers typically don't dig into the account's history or try to deanonymize the user. Subreddits like r/legaladvice and r/relationship_advice see heavy throwaway use because the topics are sensitive.

For monitoring purposes, throwaway accounts are common in churn-language threads. A frustrated user about to cancel a SaaS subscription often posts from a throwaway rather than their main account, because the post might surface for their employer or coworkers. This matters for replying strategy: a throwaway poster often won't engage in DMs or follow up, so the value is in addressing the question well for the broader lurker audience rather than expecting a direct conversion.

Reddit treats throwaways as legitimate as long as they're used for legitimate purposes. Throwaway-style accounts used for coordinated manipulation get caught and banned alongside other alt-account patterns. Reddit's anti-fraud detection differentiates between "one-time throwaway for a sensitive post" and "throwaway used to evade a previous ban" via behavioral signals.

For founders monitoring Reddit, recognizing throwaway patterns is useful. A throwaway posting detailed churn complaints about a competitor is usually a higher-signal lead than a similar post from a heavily-promotional account. The user took the time to create a fresh account specifically to discuss their experience — they care about being heard, not about being identified.
