NSFW

NSFW stands for "Not Safe For Work," a Reddit content tag indicating that a post contains adult, graphic, or otherwise workplace-inappropriate material. Posts tagged NSFW are blurred by default in feeds, hidden from logged-out users in some regions, and excluded from r/all unless a user has opted in.

Any user can apply the NSFW tag to their own submission, and moderators can apply it (or require it) on others' posts. Entire subreddits can be marked NSFW, in which case all of their content is treated as adult. Reddit's content policy requires NSFW tagging for nudity, sexual content, graphic violence, and similarly sensitive material; failure to tag can result in post removal or account action.

For marketers and monitoring tools, NSFW matters as a filter. Most B2B monitoring use cases want NSFW content excluded entirely. Reddit's API exposes the NSFW flag on every post, so tools can default to filtering it out. RedNudge filters NSFW content from digests by default because it almost never overlaps with the kinds of buyer-intent matches users care about.

NSFW also affects search and advertising. Reddit Ads will not place ads against NSFW content. Google has historically de-prioritized NSFW Reddit threads in search, though they still appear with appropriate warnings. AI search engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude) typically filter NSFW content from training and citation sources, which means NSFW threads contribute little to the AI-citation surface even when they rank well on Reddit itself.

The related tag is Spoiler, used for plot reveals; it functions similarly (blurs the content, requires a click to view) but has no adult-content connotation.
