Modmail

Modmail is Reddit's private messaging system between users and the moderator team of a subreddit.

Modmail is Reddit's private messaging system between users and the moderator team of a subreddit. Messages sent through modmail are visible to all mods of that subreddit (not just one individual), threaded by conversation, and separate from a user's regular inbox.

Modmail is the right channel for: requesting a removed post be reinstated, asking permission for an AMA or promotional post, reporting a rule violation that isn't covered by the standard report button, appealing a sub-level ban, or coordinating any partnership or research outreach with the mod team. It is not the right channel for general questions about the subreddit's topic — those should go in a post.

For marketers and founders, modmail is the most useful and most underused tool. Many subreddits that look like they ban all self-promotion will actually allow well-framed founder posts or AMAs if you ask in advance. A short, specific message — what you'd post, why this subreddit's members would benefit, what proof you can offer that you're a real person — gets a much higher response rate than just posting and hoping. Mods are volunteers and respond faster to messages that respect their time.

For mods, modmail is where the bulk of moderation labor happens: ban appeals, ambiguous content decisions, coordination with Reddit admins, and the steady stream of users asking why their post was removed. The new modmail interface (mod.reddit.com) supports labels, internal notes, and assigning conversations to specific mods, which makes it usable at scale.

If you're shadowbanned subreddit-wide or your account is acting strangely, modmail to the affected sub is usually faster than waiting on Reddit admin review.
