Vote Manipulation

Vote manipulation is the practice of artificially inflating or deflating Reddit votes through coordinated voting, alt accounts, or paid services — a sitewide rule violation that gets accounts and subreddits banned.

Vote manipulation is the practice of artificially inflating or deflating Reddit votes through coordinated voting, alt accounts, or paid voting services. Reddit treats vote manipulation as one of its most serious sitewide violations because the entire ranking system depends on votes being honest signal. Accounts caught manipulating get sitewide-banned; subreddits caught coordinating get quarantined or banned.

The most common patterns Reddit detects: a single user voting from multiple accounts (alt account voting), groups coordinating off-platform to vote a specific post (brigading), paid services offering bulk upvotes, and asking your audience to upvote you on other platforms ("please upvote my post on Reddit, link below"). All of these violate the same core rule: votes should come from organic users who would have voted without prompting.

Reddit's detection has gotten sophisticated. They look at vote timing patterns, IP overlap, account creation clusters, vote-source distribution, and behavioral fingerprints across accounts. Many vote-manipulation bans hit accounts that the user thought were safely separated — Reddit's anti-fraud system correlates them through subtle signals the user didn't notice.

The practical implication for marketers: do not, under any circumstances, ask your team or audience to upvote your Reddit posts. The risk is asymmetric. A few hundred upvotes from coordinated team accounts won't materially help your distribution; one detected violation can wipe out the account that took years to build karma and tank the subreddit you cared about.

Vote manipulation also includes vote brigading — when one subreddit or off-platform community coordinates to mass-downvote content elsewhere. Mods can see brigade patterns in the modlog and report them to Reddit admins. Brigaded threads sometimes get vote-locked, hidden, or have all votes from the source community discarded.
